The many benefits of stretching

Regular stretching has many benefits. While flexibility is one of the core components of fitness and physical activity, stretching has also many less talked about benefits that can help improve the quality of your life.

Let me summarize some of the benefits of stretching.

1. Stress relief

In response to physical and emotional stress, your muscles tend to tighten up. Focus stretching on areas of your body where you tend to hold your stress, such as your shoulders, upper back and neck. Well-stretched muscles hold less tension and, therefore, can help you feel less stressed.

2. Prevents back pain

Tight muscles can lead to a decrease in your range of motion which is a common problem for people sitting behind the computer all day. When this happens, you increase the likelihood of straining the muscles in your back. Flexibility in the hamstrings, hip flexors and muscles attached to the pelvis reduces your risk of low-back pain. Stretching will also prevent future back pain.

3. Improves circulation.

Performing stretching on a regular basis increases blood flow to your muscles and thus greater nutrient transportation.

4. Improves posture

Sitting behind the computer all day can lead to muscle imbalances and poor posture. Stretching the muscles of the lower back, shoulders and chest helps keep your back in better alignment and improves your posture.

5. Decreases tension headaches

Headaches and tension are common during stress. Stretching may help reduce the tension and muscle tightness in the head, neck, and shoulders. When these muscles are tight it can make migraine and headachesymptoms worse.

6. Calms your mind

Participating stretching regularly will simultaneously calm your mind. While stretching, you focus on mindfulness and this will give your mind a break and a moment to calm down.

Stretching doesn't have to become an additional activity in your already busy schedule. I take 5 minutes a few times a day to stretch my neck and shoulders while working. In the evening while watching TV, I do a full body stretching. You enjoy the greatest benefits of stretching when you stretch regularly so make it a part of your daily or weekly routine.
